Mercy Tooten, fifth grader at Bassette Elementary School, gives opening at the March 13 School Board meeting

 

Mercy Tooten, a fifth grader at Bassette Elementary School, was selected to give the opening at the March 13, 2024, School Board meeting. She read the poem Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou.

Mercy enjoys skating, painting, doing nails, and styling hair. She hopes to be a cosmetologist when she grows up.

Mercy was joined at the meeting by her mother, grandmother, her principal Shelly Spain, assistant principal Lakeshia Ames, and other teachers from Bassette.
