Syms Middle School students participate in regional and state FBLA conferences

Students at Syms Middle School, under the leadership of Syms Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) advisor Arnetta Hughes, have been busy participating in both regional and state leadership conferences.

Students attended the Annual Spring Regional Leadership Conference at Smithfield High School on Saturday, March 2. They participated in engaging workshops, and listened to guest speakers. They had a great time learning more about being good leaders and living productive lives. They were the only middle school in attendance. Upon returning to school, the group stopped for lunch at McDonalds across the street, and an elderly gentleman was impressed with the students' behaviors and their attire. He said, “It has been a long time since I have seen young people dressed up!”

“This made me feel good,” said Hughes. “I expose my students to many unlimited opportunities that are available to them so they can be productive citizens in society. I am truly proud of and love  my students!”

On Saturday, March 9, another group of students had the opportunity to attend the Middle Level Leadership Conference at ACE (Advanced Career Education Center) in Henrico, VA. Hughes said the students were engaged the whole time and truly enjoyed themselves.

Eighth grader Jacob Miles placed third in Elevator Speech at the conference. He is now eligible to compete at the National Leadership Conference in June in Orlando, FL. Eighth grader Nicholas Young placed fifth in Learning Strategies.

Hughes added, “I am so proud of my students and appreciate their hard work! They were dressed for success and conducted themselves as young professionals. It was a rewarding experience for all of us!”
