Elementary school students explore careers with career kits

Hampton City Schools elementary school students are learning about the Academies of Hampton and the career clusters associated with them through career kits. The office of student development and counseling purchased career kits to give the younger students the opportunity for hands-on exploration that includes play and role-playing. 

“These career kits serve as interactive tools that allow students to explore diverse professions, understand the relevance of their interests, likes, and school subjects to potential careers, and ultimately foster informed decision-making about their future paths. Through engaging activities, hands-on experiences, and thought-provoking exercises, students embark on a journey of self-discovery and career exploration,” says Carla Mahn, director of student development and counseling. “We purchased these kits to get our students thinking about their futures.”

The hands-on nature of these kits fosters experiential learning, allowing students to engage directly with different professions. From conducting simple science experiments to simulating business ventures, students gain practical insights into the day-to-day realities of various careers. Such experiences not only demystify professions but also instill a sense of confidence and aspiration in students as they envision themselves contributing meaningfully to society. The kits are an optional component of the college, career, and life readiness plan to which elementary students are exposed. Other career exploration components are guest speakers, field trips, projects, and career fairs. All of these components provide the elementary school students with experiences that assist them with a completed Academic and Career Plan Portfolio at the end of their fifth grade year.
