Andrews students enjoy steel drums presentation and lesson

Andrews PreK-8 School first graders enjoyed a performance by Gary Garlic's Caribbean Dreamin with Arts for Learning Young Audience of Virginia (YAV).

“It was a huge success, and the kids (and teachers) had so much fun!,” said Laila Schwartz, Andrews music teacher.

Every academic year, the fine arts department organizes one to two Arts for Learning YAV arts performances for each elementary school. These presentations aim to acquaint students with various art forms they may not have encountered previously and relate them to the Standards of Learning (SOLs).

“Thank you to all the teachers and administrators for scheduling the performances and supporting all the arts. This is a great way to celebrate Music In Our Schools Month! We are proud of our over 20-year relationship with Arts for Learning YAV,” shared Kelly Dee, Hampton City Schools visual and performing arts curriculum leader. “The high quality and variety of programming they provide our students, schools, and community is one way to unite everyone to celebrate our shared humanity. Hopefully many of these students will be in middle school band or chorus and join the HCS Steel Drum Ensemble in the future.”
