STUDENT SUPPORT
Trena Hatcher
Executive Director of Student Support Services
Hampton City Schools’ mission is to maximize achievement for “every student, every day, whatever it takes.” Student support is a critical component and we have a great team dedicated to the work of providing students what they need to be successful. We are “whatever it takes”.
The departments of the Student Support team understand that teaching and learning happen best when a student is in a school with a climate of high expectations and where ALL students and staff feel safe and valued. Healthy and productive schools are characterized by positive school climates that ensure student learning, development, and wellbeing by providing safety, support and connectedness, academic challenge and engagement, cultural responsiveness, and an intentional focus on social emotional learning (SEL). SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
It is not expected that all students learn in the same manner, using the same resources, or in the same time frame. The student support team stands ready to provide support so that each student has opportunity and access to become career, college and life ready.
